BLAIRSVILLE—Dr. Chris Cates (R-Blairsville) qualified for the November general election today, April 29, for Georgia’s 9th district Congressional seat which was vacated by Nathan Deal.
As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Cates most recently was the Director of Vascular Intervention at Emory University hospital and Emory’s Crawford Long Hospital. He founded and served as chairman for America College of Cardiology’s conference on cost effective healthcare delivery.
Dr. Cates is pro-life, believes in protecting Second Amendment rights, and understands the burden of higher taxes on small businesses and Georgia families. He supports a balanced approach to our nation’s energy crisis including exploration of our national resources, term limits for members of Congress, and locally controlled, student centered education. Dr. Cates believes that American citizenship is a privilege and current immigration laws should be enforced to protect that privilege. As we continue to fight the war on terrorism, he understands that Congress must be an advocate for our American military men and women. Dr. Cates is passionate about ensuring that our military is fully equipped and trained to do their jobs.
Dr. Cates has served the medical needs of the people of north Georgia for the past 21 years with weekly clinics in Hiawassee, Blairsville, and Dahlonega, and has been actively involved in the national debate on health policy and healthcare quality for 20 years. He has been a national leader in the area of the business of medicine for cost-effective healthcare delivery where he founded and chaired the American College of Cardiology national conference on the subject. He has addressed and worked as a healthcare expert with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Agency for Healthcare Review and Quality (AHRQ), and the United States Congress. Dr. Cates understands the importance of quality, affordable healthcare and is already fighting to protect every Americans’ right to choose their own doctor, access to emergency care, and access to the latest technological advancements in medicine.
Dr. Cates is a distinguished graduate of The Citadel, the Medical College of Georgia, and completed his residency and cardiology fellowship training at Vanderbilt University. Native Georgians and lifelong Baptists, Chris and his wife, Joy, have been married for over 30 years and live in Blairsville, Georgia. They have 3 grown children and are awaiting the arrival of their first grandchild in April. Dr. Cates is seeking to represent the people of Georgia’s 9th Congressional District.
